If you already live here, you know the shape of a San Carlos summer. What you may not have noticed is that the city has quietly built its programming around one night of the week, and the payoff for planning around it grows through August and into October.
The rest of 2026 has more dated anchors on the calendar than the first half did. This is a guide to the ones worth blocking off, the weekly rhythms worth defaulting to, and the specific places on Laurel Street and beyond where the season actually happens.
The Friday spine
Two things happen every Friday evening in San Carlos through August, and they were designed to complement each other whether or not the organizers planned it that way.
The city's free Music in the Park series runs Friday evenings in Burton Park from June through August, with no ticket and no fuss. It's programmed by the Parks and Recreation Department and pulls the same mix of families, dog walkers, and neighbors who've been going for a decade.
A mile away at 935 Washington Street, Devil's Canyon Brewing Company opens its beer garden every Friday at 4:00 p.m. for what the brewery calls Beer Garden Friday. It runs until 10:00 p.m. most weeks and stretches to 11:00 p.m. on the last Friday of the month. Up to seven rotating food trucks, live music, and a family-and-pet-friendly beer garden are the standing format. The Garretts have been running the brewery in San Carlos for over a decade after starting the business in Belmont in 2001, and Devil's Canyon has picked up the California Green Business Award, the San Mateo Sustainability Award, and the San Carlos Business of the Year Award along the way.
The pairing works because the brewery opens two hours before the park concert starts and stays open three or four hours after. A Friday that begins with a food truck at Devil's Canyon and moves to Burton Park for the last set of the concert is a version of San Carlos that a lot of residents haven't tried yet.
What's dated between now and October
The next twelve weeks contain a specific set of programmed events. These are the ones with fixed dates worth putting on a calendar rather than trying to remember.
August 5, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Rocket-building workshop at Hiller Aviation Museum, 601 Skyway Road. Kids convert bottles into high-performance rocket vehicles.
August 7 to 8. Burton Park Campout. Pitch a tent, roast s'mores, play field games, and watch a movie at dusk in the middle of downtown San Carlos. The city runs it as a family event and it's one of the more unusual overnight opportunities on the Peninsula.
August 12, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Performing birds show at Hiller Aviation Museum. The museum's collection of nearly 50 aircraft is the backdrop.
September 5 and September 19, at sunset. Outdoor family movies at Flanagan Field inside Burton Park, on alternating Saturday evenings.
October 10 and 11. Art and Wine Faire on Laurel Street and San Carlos Avenue. Over 200 artists, three entertainment stages, beer, wine, and food vendors. It draws over 40,000 people annually and remains free to attend, which is worth appreciating for anyone who has priced comparable weekend festivals in the Bay Area.
October 30. Downtown trick-or-treat along Laurel Street, an event the city has run for years without changing the formula, which is part of its charm.
Six anchors in twelve weeks is a denser calendar than most Peninsula downtowns produce in a year.
The Sunday counterweight
Sunday is the other day San Carlos programs deliberately, and it does so more quietly.
The San Carlos Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Laurel Street between San Carlos Avenue and Cherry Street. Produce, specialty foods, flowers, baked goods, and local artisans, year-round. It's the kind of standing weekly event that becomes invisible if you live nearby, which is exactly why it deserves a second look this summer.
Devil's Canyon anchors Sunday too, with Game Day Sundays from noon to 5:00 p.m. If you have a game to watch, they have a jumbotron and a beer garden that welcomes dogs. Beer Saturdays run the same noon-to-five window the day before.
When the afternoon needs an indoor plan
Hiller Aviation Museum at 601 Skyway Road is the underused answer to the specific problem of a hot August afternoon with kids at home. Beyond the standing collection of aircraft, the museum runs a rolling summer calendar of workshops. General admission requires no advance booking, which matters when Saturday plans fall apart at 10:00 a.m.
The Biggest Little Air Show that the museum runs in June sells out annually. If you missed it this year, the August workshop schedule is where the museum is putting its programming energy for the rest of the season.
The operators worth building a habit around
A weekly rhythm needs anchor spots. Four of them are doing something specific enough to route through repeatedly.
- Domenico Winery. Family-owned, producing Cal-Italia varietals in San Carlos for over 20 years, and running a ticketed events calendar year-round. Their Annual Orphan Barrel Tasting drew a full crowd on a March Sunday afternoon and their fall calendar tends to fill up early.
- Hapa's Brewing Company. The Brainstormer Trivia nights have become a recurring fixture. Different register than Devil's Canyon, similar level of neighborhood commitment.
- Laurel Street Arts. Ceramics, glass, canvas painting, pottery classes for kids and adults. Their summer camp mediums are broad enough that a rainy or smoky day plan is possible for most ages.
- The Sunday Farmers Market, again, because it is the one weekly event that pays back the effort of showing up more than most residents give it credit for.
None of these are new arrivals. All four have been building followings for years and reward the resident who develops a default rather than reading a Yelp roundup every Friday afternoon.
The pattern worth noticing: the events on the San Carlos calendar are almost all free or low-ticket, and almost all run by either the city or operators who've been here long enough to treat programming as a habit rather than a marketing exercise.
Getting in and out of downtown on event weekends
Two logistical notes that matter more on Art and Wine Faire weekend than any other:
Wheeler Plaza at 616 Laurel Street is the city's designated event pad. It's where the June soccer watch parties happened this summer and where most large-format downtown gatherings stage. Parking there evaporates fast on faire weekends, and the surrounding blocks fill in behind it.
The Caltrain station sits four blocks off Laurel Street, which means residents in the flats can walk to nearly every event on this list and residents in the hills can drop a car at San Carlos Station and cover the last stretch on foot. On October 10 and 11, the walk is meaningfully faster than the drive.
Why this matters for anyone who owns here
The value of a walkable downtown is easy to talk about in the abstract and harder to measure until you've lived through a full year of it. What the second half of 2026 offers, specifically, is a compact test: six dated anchors between August and October, layered on top of two weekly rhythms, all inside a fifteen-minute walk of most of San Carlos.
